Cause Description:
The Keenan’s Kids Foundation is a national child safety organization dedicated to informing the public about child safety hazards. One such avenue has been through Keenan’s nationally acclaimed book, 365 Ways to Keep Kids Safe, which resulted in a nationally syndicated Kid’s Safety Bulletin. The foundation has taken on various projects over the years, including playground safety campaigns, free gun trigger lock distributions at area malls, food and clothes drives, and distribution of weekly sandwich deliveries to a local homeless shelter. One of the foundation’s more recent projects has been the Murphy House Project. The Murphy family, including 24 adopted children with special needs, had long outgrown their small home in Georgia. After Extreme Makeover: Home Edition first accepted an offer to build the family a new home, and then retracted it because the project was “too big,” the Keenan’s Kids Foundation stepped in. After years of fundraising and lots of hard work, the project is well underway and the Murphys moved into their new home in August 2009. Today, the foundation is still working hard to increase awareness and fundraise for the project and the family. Mission: Children at-risk do not vote and have neither paid lobbyists nor high-powered public relations firms. Consequently, the interests of these children are often considered unimportant and are lost in the system. The Atlanta-based Keenan's Kids Foundation was formed in 1993 to assist and advise these children both directly and through the training of law students and practicing lawyers so they are more aware of the needs of children at-risk in the legal system.
