Housing and Service, Inc. (HSI) is a 23 year old human/social services org that provides permanent housing with case management, medical, learning, food and other services on site in Manhattan to 535 formerly homeless people. Supportive Housing is the most cost effective and compassionate way to deal with homelessness whereby people from the shelters are giving the chance to live independently in their own apartment; most people are contributing to 20% of their rent and the remaining funded through contracts and private support. New York State began investing in supportive housing 30 years ago, but the State deficit and problems in the legislature threaten services funding for 40,000 people in supportive housing in NYS. HSI is one of the largest providers of housing with services for people who are mainly older, mentally ill, physically disabled, people living with HIV/AIDS and other barriers to housing.
